Culture can be viewed as the values and norms that the members of a group hold, follow, or create. It is not always influenced by a single entity but it is multi-layered, influenced by many aspects such as by a region, religion, gender, class, and individual issues.
There is significant evidence to show that culture plays a significant role in how we understand our mental health but that different cultures see mental health differently, which can play a key role in how we manage and perceive our illness. Counselling can help identify culture infused ideologies and help you to counter mental health issues that arise from culture conflict.
Beliefs such as possessions by spirits, yin/yang imbalances, the ‘evil eye’, ‘black magic’, or the breaking of taboos may still be present in your household, so talking about how you feel might be difficult and can be isolating.
You may feel like your culture holds many barriers in you being able to express yourself properly, not only within the family unit but also within the outside world. Maybe you feel that other people around you, do not understand what it is like to live in your cultural household and the constraints that can come with along with the pleasures that it comes with. That is why, here at Be U Counselling Services in Poole, we ensure that you are not uncomfortable in sharing your thoughts and opinions and try to respect own beliefs about what matters to you.
