Culture can be viewed as the values and norms that the members of a group hold, follow or create. It is not always influenced by a single entity but is multi-layered influenced by many aspects such as region, religion, gender, class and individual issues.

There is significant evidence to show that not only does culture play a significant role in how we understand our mental health but that different cultures see mental health differently and this can play a key role in how we manage and perceive our illness.

Views such as possessions by spirits, yin/yang imbalances, the ‘evil eye’, ‘black magic’ or the breaking of taboos may still be apparent in your household so talking about how you are feeling may be difficult and can be isolating.

You may feel your culture holds many barriers in you being able to express yourself properly maybe within the family unit but also outside in the world also. Maybe you feel that other people do not understand what it is like to live in your cultural household and the constraints that it can come with as well as the pleasures it comes with.

How I can help

Be U Counselling Service based in Poole, Dorset can help you in understanding the culture you live in a lot better. Being able to explore the cultural idea, beliefs and values in a safe non-judgemental place can help you to understand the perceptions and behaviours of family and friends and help you to respond better to them. The counselling room will also allow you your own individual space to talk openly and honestly without judgement.

I offer a free 30 minute, no obligation session where you can come and meet me, ask me questions or use it as a short counselling session to get a feel for what to commit to. This session will give you the opportunity to discover if you feel comfortable working with me and are able to build a therapeutic relationship with me which is important for counselling to take place. If after the 30 minutes, you are happy and would like to continue the counselling sessions, I will book you in for an assessment session where we will set out a therapeutic contract.
