Spirituality is a broad concept with many perspectives, in general, it includes a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves and it involves a search for a meaning life.
People find spirituality in various ways, some may find it linked to an association like a church or temple whereas others may find comfort in personal relationships with God or a higher power. Others may seek spirituality in art or culture.
So why is spirituality important?
There is growing evidence that indicates that spiritual practice is associated with better health and wellbeing, for example, a lot of the spiritual practices help you to look into the mind.
Although spiritual practices can all be different, some of the example spiritual practice are listed below:
- Meditation – mindfulness meditation has proven to be helpful for people with depression and anxiety, cancer, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome.
- Prayer – this can elicit hope, gratitude and compassion all of which are good for your mental wellbeing. The fact that you can gain comfort in difficult times can play a big part in someone who is feeling depressed and not feeling heard.
- Yoga – an old practice that aims to create a sense of unity within the practice through physical postures, ethical behaviours and breath expansion. Yoga has been found to reduce inflammation and stress, decrease depression and anxiety, lower blood pressure and increase feelings or wellbeing.
